Delurking Day with an Opinion Poll

The Great Mofo Delurk 2007 The Great Mofo Delurk 2007The Great Mofo Delurk 2007The Great Mofo Delurk 2007

Hey kids. It's officially The Great mofo Delurk. Thanks to Schmutzie, who I discovered through Kristabella, there's a day to encourage folks to leave some comment love. Nothin' wrong with that, right?

So, to encourage you, I thought I'd ask your opinion on something. When The Targo and I discovered I was pregnant, he really wanted to know the baby's sex. I, on the other hand, was adamant about not finding out. Eight of my close friends have had babies in the past two years and six of the eight decided to wait and find out when the baby was born. When The Targo and I had differing opinions, I felt like my vote won out --- becaust honestly, it's my feet that are disappearing. In my mind, there are so few true surprises. And sadly, most of those are bad surprises. This is a genuine surprise that you have NO control over... and it's a really good one.

What about you, Internets? Those of you who have children, or plan to possibly-maybe-could be- have children ... Did you or do you want to find out if the baby's a boy or girl? What did you/will you do if you and your significant other disagree? Does it matter if it's the first child or subsequent children?

Happy Delurking Day!

I thought I could resist......until the ultrasound tech said those magic words: "Would you like to know the sex of the baby?"

"Um, definitely, yeah!"

"It's a girl."

Wow. It didn't matter on the sex, really, but it made it suddenly more real (plus, I could shop for PINK!). Lovely Daughter is the best gift and biggest blessing we have ever recieved.

I'm with you. I don't want to know. (You know, on the off chance I ever get preggers.)

It is the best surprise in the world! As long as the baby is healthy, I don't need to know until it arrives.

And they make enough neutral clothing for newborns, you don't HAVE to know.

good question.

I tend to be a control freak, so I know I would WANT to know.

But of course there is a little part of me that might want to be surprised. But that part of me would probably lose.

I did hear from a L&D nurse once that people who don't know tend to have quicker births because they are just THAT much more eager to get the damn baby out. Food for thought...

Hi! I clicked over from Laurel, and, of course, had to comment today! My husband and I haven't really talked much about whether or not we'll find out the sex when the time comes, but I know that I definitely do NOT want to know. At least not with our first kid. After that I might be okay with knowing, but like you said, there are so few true surprises anymore, and that is one surprise I've always looked forward to.

I didn't find out for my first child but for this baby (due November) we decided to find out. I will be torn for the next baby. But I won't start thinking about for awhile!!

I am too impatient, I don't think I could wait. I'd keep the name a surprise to others, though.

Hi Marianne!!!! Snirk. I'm about commented out here...

Now. About this knowing the sex thing? Well, they told me I was having a boy. (Remember, this was in 1991...um, a while ago). My doctor said, "Yea, they're right about 50% of the time."

So I knew, but didn't trust, right?

Good thing they were right. I'd still be thinking of a girl's name.

Did I want to know? Yes. Did Mr. Hot? Hell, it was his third - he didn't care, he already had one of each!

Umm... I'd like to say that I wouldn't want to know, but I'm a total planner / control freak... so maybe I'd cave.

We both definitely want to know. After this one, I may not care, but this one, I want to know.

and does anyone know what MOFO stands for? I'd like to know before I put a button on my blog :)

I definitely wanted to know and my husband didn't--I won :o) Anyway, For all of our kids, we have 3, we kept it a secret from EVERYONE! It was really fun playing it out and I was able to fix up the room and get clothes etc... ready for baby X.
Be careful though, if they tell you the sex, they aren't always correct, so be prepared with the opposite baby name too! We always kept the receipts for everything we bought just in case. Also, we didn't paint the little tots room gender specific, so we were safe that way too.
Enjoy whichever you decide. It is a totally rockin experience that you just can't describe to those who've yet to experience parenthood.

And about the surprise thing, yeah, very few things in life are a surprise, but WHEN you have the baby will still be a surprise won't it? Unless you are of the population scheduling C-sections for predictablity, you will have no idea when the little one will decide to pop. I never hit my due date...and except for my 3rd who I had induced,I had to deal with major weather issues. The first was a flood in June and my second was and ice storm in January. Ugh! Not exactly ideal choices, but definitely surprises!
Blessings to you on your last trimester!

Not pregnant and probably won't be for a long time, but I'm really not sure! I think I'd want to know.. but then I think I'd rather not.. GAH! I don't know. It's a tough one!

Just had our first (a boy) in July '06... initially, my husband did not want to find out the sex. But I convinced him that there would be plenty of OTHER surprises with a baby, whether it was a boy or girl! ;) He's 14 1/2 months now, and the surprises just keep on coming!

With both of ours, we found out the sex. We wanted to know, especially with our first, because I'm a planner. And if it was a girl, I was doing it all girl. If it was a boy, it was gonna be fire trucks and airplanes for his little room. So, because I have anxiety attacks if I can't plan things ahead, we found out. And I'm so glad we did, because when each was born I felt like I had a connection to a specific person.

If we have any more (no plans just yet but who knows...I like torture), we'll find out again. I liked knowing.

I don't know...I was always adament about finding out prior to the birth because it just makes sense, shopping wise. I'd get pretty sick of yellow and green! But lately, i think maybe it might be fun to wait and be surprised. Who knows, i'm sure when temptation presents itself, i'll give in!
