Don't Poke the Belly! It Might Explode!

I'm a back sleeper. That's fine and good except when I'm stuffy. But that's The Targo's burden to bear - "for better or worse," and all that. New Cat - I love him, I really do - takes advantage of my weak position and sits on my lower abdomen and kneads me. I didn't mind so much before I started getting a tummy; now if feels like I'm being stabbed from the inside when his large, jackrabbit feet tread on me. Ouch.

Rumor has it there comes a point in pregnancy where you're not supposed to sleep on your back. As Amy would say "Or your baby will burst into flames!" I'm trying to train myself to sleep on my side. Man, is that hard! But I try. I've got a pillow between my knees and I hug another one. Of course, New Cat comes and chills on my achy hip. (Ouch again.) And it just doesn't work. In the morning, I wake up on my back, with one cat between my feet, one cat by my leg, and my left arm thrown over The Targo's face. (This acrobatic sleeping is why I purchased this item.)

Anybody have advice on how to stay on my side? I thought about putting a cat on either side of me, but then I might end up with squished Mystic. I'm not sure that's covered under "for better or worse."

Hee, maybe not the kitties - but I suggest using a couple of pillows to sort of box you in. I'm trying to sleep less on my stomach lately, and that helps me to stay on my side longer.

I'm no help. I actually fear pregnancy because I sleep on my stomach. Am so cutting a hole out of my mattress.

It's hard to train yourself since your body likes to do whatever it wants during REM sleep.

My guess, is in a few months, the side will be the only thing that's remotely comfortable enough to sleep on and problem will be solved.

But don't hold me to it. Do what Alyndabear says.

I was a stomach sleep until I hurt my back a couple of summers ago. So, the idea of cutting a hole in my mattress sounds awesome. :)

I remember the doctor telling me that I couldn't sleep on my back at all. But, I was a high-risk pregnancy, so it's probably different for you.

The Hubby used to wedge me in to keep me comfy and on my left side (it's the left you've got to sleep on later in the pregnancy). We bought one of those foam mattress cover thingies to keep me from getting sore and then he would wedge a large body pillow behind my back. I had a wedge under my belly, a pillow between my knees and I hugged one, too.

As for the cat situation, I think I yelled 'Gerroff!!!!" enough times in my sleep to nip that in the bud. ;) LOL!

Oh, and if I accidentally ended up on my back, Lovely Daughter would start kicking the crap out of me until I turned over!

I'm already a side sleeper ... but which side are you supposed to sleep on?

If you are comfortable on your back, sleep on your back for now then. You'll get to a point where it's no longer comfortable, but that may not be for a long way off. I was still sleeping on my back until the final weeks. Take it while you can! Eventually that belly will be stickin' out so far, that you'll want to be on your side so you can rest that baby on something other than yourself.

I think Liz is right-- I think it's your left side you're supposed to sleep on when pregnant. Or your right.

And they (whoever 'they' are) make body pillows that (are supposed to) help you stay on your side...

Good luck, though. Seriously, I will fail that test of pregnancy. My sleeping routine is: side, belly, other side, back, belly. Much flopping.

It's the left you're supposed to sleep on because of the location of the abdominal aorta.

I agree with the Wooden Porch, it is more comfy to rest that baby on something other than you! LOL!

I hope kate5kiwis stops by...she has 5 kids and is a resident expert, I think ;)

Thank God I already sleep on my side. With every post you make about pregnancy, my certainty that I will be miserable at being pregnant / being a mother grows.

You're not supposed to sleep on your back? I never heard of that!

You're so funny. I am with you about sleep positions during pregnancy. I have to confess to sleeping on my back quite often, despite being now eight months pregnant (with baby #4). The real danger, as I understand it, is lack of blood circulation which will show up in dizziness. So my rule is that if I'm not getting dizzy, then the baby and I are okay. Personally I think the whole sleep on your left side thing is mostly just hype to sell the el-expensive-o preggy pillows.

Trust me, there will come a time when you will NOT BE ABLE TO SLEEP ON YOUR BACK. You will wake up when you are. And towards the end you probably won't be sleeping too well anyway!

It will be okay. I just bought a large body pillow. I still have it. I love that thing!
