Winter Wonderland

I keep saying "I heart winter!" "Snow is fun!" "I like to ski!" (I've been once.) Things like that. But really, I like mild winter. Thirty degrees and snow is fine. Heck, twenty degrees and manageable snow is fine. Yesterday? It was in the low teens and we got four inches of snow. You know, that's all fine and good ... and I could totally work with it, UNTIL I had a baby that I have to transport in the morning.

This morning, we waded through about a foot of snow (thank you, plows!) to get to the garage. I'm very grateful for my garage, really. It's just three doors down, and across the alley. Once we got there, the garage door was resistant to rising... but it did. Again, I'm grateful. It's just a pain in the neck. Meanwhile, some little guy was crying because the snow was blowing in his cute little face. I understand, it was blowing in mine too!

We managed to get on the road, and arrive at daycare and work. So, really, the morning was fine. But again, I wonder how people who aren't as fortunate as we are do it. How do mothers get their kids bundled up and wait in the freezing temperatures for the bus? How do people without cars in rural areas walk their kids (sometimes miles) to wherever it is they need to go? These are the people I'm thinking of during this season.

I have no idea! I live in a pretty mild climate and our winter is nothing compared to Chicago. It's been in the 30s for three days and I'm crawling out of my skin because we've all been cooped up in the house. I guess, like anything else, you just DO what you have to DO because there's no other choice. And wading through a foot of snow while holding a crying baby for half a block to your car is no small thing!

I wonder if the kid gets used to it? It doesn't sound fun, but like Becca I don't live where the weather gets as bad as Chicago. I also pray for the homeless families - it must be hard during rough winters for them!
