Ahh-Choo

This title reminds me of a funny story that I don't have the energy to write out at this moment...

But really, I'm just whining about having a cold. Again. I had the seasonal flu in mid-September, some sort of virus in mid-October, and now ... early-November brings me a cold. HATE.

I'm trying to be thankful for all of the real blessings in my life ... and not think about my stupid ears, nose and throat.

Plague Ship

Dude. Gah.

Nathan and I have been sick for a week and we've turned a corner --- finally. But my head! OY!

I'm that person who has said every year "I don't need a flu shot. I'm a healthy person --- the flu won't make me that sick." I am an idiot.

In Need of a Good Vacation

Dudes. DUDES. I am just worn out. Things are a little but crazy, but not bad crazy. I'm just ready for a break. In a few weeks, The Targo, Nathan and I will be headed out to Virginia to spend a week with my dearest Amy and her family. Really, this cannot come soon enough.

Fortunately, the weather is beginning to break in Chicago (I say that with snow/sleet potential in the air) so perhaps my crabbiness will subside. Being outside always cheers me, no matter the season. I'm particularly looking forward to this spring, summer, and fall because Nathan is a runner! He's so ready to GO. Our time at the park should be very different than it was last year.

The Targo and I took Nathan to the zoo last week (I have zoo issues), but there are so many other things that we'd like to do this summer: Movies in the Park, baseball games, several different zoos, and possibly swimming. Nathan has never been in a pool.

All of this "vacation planning" makes me want to go on a really big vacation. I keep telling The Targo that I'm antsy to travel again. So is he. Recently, I've caught him (several times) investigating cruise and vacation packages. The planning, as silly as it sounds, makes me feel better. At the same time, I wonder when I became such a malcontent.

Thoughts On A Winter Morn

So... I don't wear makeup. There's no reason except that I never got into the habit. Most of my friends wear that professional looking, subtle makeup and I think they're all gorgeous. But me? Well lately, it's a good day when I remember to brush my hair.

I've been thinking about this lately because, honestly, I've kind of let myself go downhill over the past few months. I lost all but 7 pounds of my baby weight (seriously, nothing to be proud of there), but my body doesn't look anything like it did before I was pregnant: I've got pockets of jiggly everywhere! The clothes I wear to work are pretty unflattering: plain black or striped pants, t-shirt or sweater, and I wear comfy flat shoes. The unbrushed hair and lack of makeup complete this very sad picture.

The Targo? He looks great! He's not as thin as he was when he was running 20 miles per week, but that's good. He was too thin then. He buys nice clothes, he pays an absurd amount for his haircuts, and he has really nice white teeth. (Hmm... this sounds like a sales pitch!)

So, I'm thinking about baby steps. The Targo's parents will be watching Nathan Monday-Wednesday. This might enable me to get back to the gym on those three days. The Targo and I have been working on meal plans, so that we watch what we eat a little more. I'm trying to shower at night (which I hate), so that I'll not only have more time to get ready in the morning, but also that I'll remember to brush my hair. But the makeup. I just don't know. It just seems like another thing that I'll have to do in the morning. And is it worth it?

Do you wear makeup? Have you always worn it, or is it something you acquired recently, in adulthood, when you got that job, when you hit 30?

Winter Wonderland

I keep saying "I heart winter!" "Snow is fun!" "I like to ski!" (I've been once.) Things like that. But really, I like mild winter. Thirty degrees and snow is fine. Heck, twenty degrees and manageable snow is fine. Yesterday? It was in the low teens and we got four inches of snow. You know, that's all fine and good ... and I could totally work with it, UNTIL I had a baby that I have to transport in the morning.

This morning, we waded through about a foot of snow (thank you, plows!) to get to the garage. I'm very grateful for my garage, really. It's just three doors down, and across the alley. Once we got there, the garage door was resistant to rising... but it did. Again, I'm grateful. It's just a pain in the neck. Meanwhile, some little guy was crying because the snow was blowing in his cute little face. I understand, it was blowing in mine too!

We managed to get on the road, and arrive at daycare and work. So, really, the morning was fine. But again, I wonder how people who aren't as fortunate as we are do it. How do mothers get their kids bundled up and wait in the freezing temperatures for the bus? How do people without cars in rural areas walk their kids (sometimes miles) to wherever it is they need to go? These are the people I'm thinking of during this season.

Can I Tell You About My Day?

I got to work bright and early, which was no easy task with a (STILL) sick baby. Man, is he crabby. Poor thing. Anyway, I got to work early-ish to get work done. Our entire network was down. Awesome. Essentially, I fielded phone calls for about an hour. Then I got in my company car (which had 1/4 tank of gas) to drive to this monthly meeting I go to. Because Chicago has rush hour 24-7, a 25 mile drive took me an hour and fifteen minutes. Rock. Upon my arrival, I discovered that the meeting was not going on, but it is in fact, scheduled for next Thursday. My car, which has a gigantor engine, decided that it wasn't quite sure if a 1/4 of a tank was enough to drive 50 miles. The low fuel light came on and I freaked. I prayed for the next 14 miles until I pulled into the parking lot at work.

I got back to my desk and finished a task - just one. Suddenly, it was time for lunch. When I got back to my desk with my tacos, I had an email waiting for me saying that some dude had my phone. I guess I dropped it on the three block walk from my office to the taco place. Fortunately, the guy was honest and just gave me my phone back. But really, it looks like it got run over by a car.

What sucks is that I still have 2+ hours of the work day. I'm sure it's just gonna get better.

The Suck

It's nearly 90 degrees and our air conditioner has been broken for three days. Hot-hot-hot! And our windows, for security reasons, are the kind that open from the top ... which is SEVEN FEET off the ground. A repairman was supposed to come by yesterday, but didn't ... because it was raining.

(I know I'm complaining a lot ... it's hot and I'm crabby.)

Not Giving Up

Despite being fat, completely out of shape, and eating like crap - I am not giving up. I'm not going to be a crabby, dowdy, doesn't leave the house mom. I'm not.

I'm completely overwhelmed right now. Nathan, blessedly, is the easy part. Working from home is just stressing me out. Every time I go into the office, there are snide comments, prying questions, and a general attitude that I'm getting away with something. It's quite frustrating. Especially since I'm more productive at home.

The Targo, in his infinite wisdom and all around awesomeness, sent me to the hair salon last night. I don't have any pictures today ... tomorrow. Really. It's amazing what highlights, lowlights, and a cute cut will do for ya. Oh ... and there's coming home to this:

Bullets, Snippets, Kitties, Oh My!

  • Is anyone else as hooked on American Idol as I am this season? I thought the top 24, with a few WTF exceptions, was the most talented ever. I'm sad every week when someone gets eliminated. Except for those exceptions noted above. Two of the people I was sure would be in the top three are gone. (I'm pretty sure Kristabella single handedly eliminated Carly.) And I'm fascinated by the washed up crazies (and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber) they've had coaching the finalists. But, seriously, Carly did the same arrangement of Jesus Christ, Superstar that Laura from the Grease show did. And let me just say, Laura was way better. WAY.
  • I've lost 15 lbs of my baby weight. I had always heard rumors of those women who wore their pre-pregnancy jeans home from the hospital. Maybe they weren't 32 and maybe they hadn't had C-sections. Or maybe they were my insanely skinny even at 64 mother-in-law. Maybe. I blame my SLOW, very very slow, return to not-so-grande-ness on the crappy weather in Chicago. I barely left my house in February because it was so damned cold. Most of March wasn't much better. And the first two weeks of April saw both Nathan and myself with colds. And now I'm back to work. I try to get out for a mile walk every day, but it doesn't always work. Nap time and all.
  • I have secret fantasies of all of my favorite bloggers moving to Chicagoland. I think Kristabella would find this very funny, considering I can't keep a date with her to save my life.
  • This morning, I had Nathan on the floor, playing on his mat. Magic, being a FREAK SHOW, had the zooms and kept hurdling over the baby. I almost killed him, but I've seen how the Humane Society goes after people on the news.
  • Because I'm boring, and still have no idea where the camera is, I will leave you with an old Nathan picture:

Change of Life

I was one of the last of my college friends to get married, but most of my Chicago friends remained single. When The Targo and I got engaged, I remember how my social life dramatically changed. I no longer went out with girlfriends on the weekends, had cocktails after work, visited out of town friends on my own (this one is because I was saving money for the wedding). I started to miss my friends, but I felt like I was moving onto a different life.

Life got crazy. I got pregnant just a few months after our wedding, we moved, and The Targo started a new job. Then we started nesting. I was tired all of the time and wanted to be at home. Besides, I left for work at 6:15 am; I was toast by 7:00 at night.

Again, most of my college friends have had children over the past two years. My closest Chicago friend has a little girl just 9 months older than Nathan. So, there are people in my life who are going through, or have just gone through, the same phase in life that I'm in. Plenty of people actually. Thank goodness. I can't tell you how many times I call Colleen and say "Nathan is doing blah-blah-blah. Is that normal??" God bless her. She's also up to the mid-day coffee date. She gets the infant "schedule."

So, what's the problem?

Things are ... different than I expected. I didn't think my in-laws would be my social life. The Targo, the sweet man he is, always offers to watch the little guy so I can go out and do things. But, again, it's about being in a different phase of life. When I get up at 4 am with a baby, and 6:00 for good, I'm too beat to go out to a wine bar at 9:00, or a movie, or a party.

We've been talking about moving to the suburbs (just the idea gives me hives). Who am I going to know out there? Besides my in-laws, I mean. Yeah, it would so rock to live in more than 750 square feet, but I am comfortable here. I love our neighborhood and its plethora of young families. I love that we're just a 10 minute drive or 45 minute walk from Colleen. I love that we live blocks away from Nathan's doctor and our vet. I love that there are people out walking at 6:00 am and 10:00 pm. But mostly, I love that my friends are here. Even though things are different for all of us, I know that we can get together without too much effort. Or using the expressway.

I'm sure this is just a minor case of the "mommy blues" and also, my despicable "grass-is-greener" attitude. But, what did you new moms do to stay connected to your friends without children? Or, if you're that friend, how did you stay connected to the new moms? Was their constant state of sleep-deprived-homebody-ness irritating, or did you understand?

*****I can't find the camera. Nathan will be three months old on Friday, so I'm certain I need to get some pictures up!

It's Monday Again

Last week was a little bit of hell. The poor baby. Working from home. The cougar. The earthquake. Visiting my mom and dad. Having to see my SUCKY brother. And suddenly, it's all Monday again, and I'm crabby.

My first week back to work was a bit of a struggle. Nathan actually slept quite a bit because he was sick. And I was thinking, had I not been working from home, I would have had to take a few days off because the little guy had a fever. What was hard was going into work on Wednesday for a meeting. Unfortunately, I work in a culture where telecommuting is UNHEARD OF. It's not just rare ... I'm the first person to do it. So, there are people who are supportive, people who are confused, and people who are pissed. I'm sure the third group is going to make this hard for my boss to let my "trailblazing" continue. Be that as it may, I'm going to ride this good fortune out. I love being home with Nathan.

The Targo and I went to my hometown to visit my mom and dad, as well as catch some of my family who had yet to meet Nathan. Pretty much everyone gushed over him. (I'm the baby of the family, and they probably thought my old arse would never have children.) My oldest (erm, sucky) brother stopped by and was indifferent about him. Of course, Nathan's existence had nothing to do with my brother, so why would he be interested? This is the same sibling that 1) didn't get me a wedding gift, or send me a card, or even say congratulations, 2) never acknowledged my pregnancy news, and 3) is married to my EVIL sister-in-law. Did I mention I'm crabby?

I am hoping that this week is better. Monday was a little rough with a baby who would JUST. NOT. SLEEP. but screamed instead. But, I'm sure tomorrow will be better. I'm rarely crabby two days in a row.

Brought to You by the Letter Ewwww

You see ... I've got absolutely nothing to talk about, except the plague. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

I've been a little freaky with Nathan, watching for any sign that he might be getting sick. He's been a "mucus-y" baby since birth, so it's hard to tell if he's sneezing more than usual. I'm just hoping that nursing will keep his immune system strong. Stronger than mine anyway.

Tomorrow is The Targo's birthday (he'll be 31!) and between my plague and the weather, our plans may be a bust. I dunno. Hopefully, I'll make a miraculous recovery between now and then. And also, the weather gods realize April 12th is actually spring.

Whining as a Career

Gah... Low-grade fever, aches and pains, ever-running nose, coughs, weakness, and a poor baby that just wants to be held!! We're about to take nap number three.

So, my dry-run for my work-from-home-gig did not go well. It was all technology issues, thankfully, and not my being unable to find time to work. I've GOT TO get everything cleared up by Friday or I have to go into work on Monday. Which sucks. For several reasons. 1) No babysitter, and 2) I don't fit into my old clothes yet, so no work-appropriate clothing.

Other than that, I've got absolutely nothing. I am, however, bummed that my coffee dates with Kristin keep falling through. I'm so sorry, man!

Hate!

I've totally got the flu. Isn't April a little late in the season? Bah!

The Grind, She Calls

As of next Monday, I will be back at work. It's not as bleak as all that as I'll be working from home. I'm the first person in my organization given this opportunity and I absolutely want to do a stellar job.

Naturally, I'm a bit nervous, so I'm going to do a dry run on Monday. It will be a day's worth of work - unpaid - but it's worth it to see how well I do managing a two month old and a full time job in the same house.

I imagine I'll be stressing about it all weekend. Because I'm a freak like that.

Do any of you work from home? Whether you have children or not, do you have strategies to stay on task?

Random Frozen Thoughts

  • Oh my goodness. Who was that (insane) woman who hijacked my blog yesterday? Yipes. Seriously, it was a hard day, but everything is fine. Thank you for your thoughts.

  • It's damned cold in Chicago and I am SO BORED! My poor mom was here for a week and we barely left our house. We took a walk yesterday and let me tell you, pushing a stroller through three inches of slush, plus an inch or so of ice, is not fun. I've often said I'm a winter person, but I cannot wait for spring!

  • I cannot stop eating! Does breastfeeding make everyone completely ravenous? Speaking of which, I'm off to get a snack and nurse Nathan again.

... Um ... Nothing to Report

Hi! Still here. I'm feeling OK. I had moderate to severe contractions for an hour and a half last night. They were somewhat spaced out (3 to 12 minutes apart). And then I fell asleep. Today? I'm back to mild contractions at fairly long intervals. I'm assuming this is normal? (Any reassurance available would be awesome!)

If nothing happens today, I have an appointment with my doctor in the morning. Hopefully, I'll get a better read then.

I am going a little bit crazy with nothing to do. I guess I could take another nap (at 8 am?) or something.

(Estimated) Due Date

Um... Peanut?

Hmm... I'm still feeling fine. I've been having contractions off and on for about a week or so. When I went to the doctor on Thursday, I made two additional appointments, including a "non-stress test." That's for Friday and I cannot tell you how much I hope I don't need it. I already feel like I'm pregnant with a 30 lb. baby. Okay, okay, that's just what my belly weighs. GAH!

More later...

Unplannable Planning

Just thinkin' in type ... so you know it's even more scattered than usual.

Today is my last day at work. Probably. Over the past week (and yes, I know I'm super lucky), I've been having a hard time sleeping; thus, 5:15 comes freaking early (which is why it's been nearly 6:00 the past two days).

I had this ridiculous goal of being able to work until the 31st (with my Jan. 19th est. due date), because of this awesome training I wanted to attend. However, being at the end of my 39th week, I realize I was ABSOLUTELY INSANE when having those thoughts! Because I? Am so done with work. I have this morbid fear of going into labor any place other than home, but especially work. Also, sitting in an office chair all day (my job is way sedentary) makes those feet pressed against my ribs even more uncomfortable.

What's difficult/interesting about maternity leave is all of the planning you have to do up front. I had to submit paperwork for the days that I'll be taking as sick, unpaid, or vacation, and it's so hypothetical. I am filling out health insurance paperwork that's asking me for date of birth, sex, name of the baby -- again, all things I don't know. It's silly, but the required planning takes some of the fun out of the surprise.

So, what if I take off after today and I don't have the baby for two more weeks? I guess those are two weeks subtracted from my leave, time I won't get to spend with the baby. At this point, I am so OK with that.

Please remind me of that in three months.
