Slow Down, Now!

When Nathan went to his 6-month exam a couple of weeks ago, he had no evidence of teeth in his tiny little mouth. Since then, two bottom teeth have started coming in with a vengeance! Nathan, whose disposition has changed dramatically since he has outgrown his acid reflux, has been whiny, screamy and it's just sad.

He's also caught a minor cold. I had heard that nasal congestion and low grade fever often accompany teething - but I've recently read (I have no idea which account is more reputable) that they are not normal parts of teething. Rather, they may indicate infection. I have no idea.

On the positive side, the hesitant forward crawling has turned into officially going forward. Right. Now. Sometimes, one of his legs gets a little confused and he'll tuck it under his bum. And suddenly, he's sitting. He looks so confused when this happens. Perhaps that's just his face, which looks so much like The Targo right now.

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, because I have no short term memory, but I'm making all of Nathan's baby food. So far we've had carrots, apples, bananas, and peas. The Targo has begged me to feed him no more peas. It's been really fun to make his food, and so easy. I don't think I've tasted baby food in a jar as a non-baby, but this food tastes so good because it's fresh. On this week's menu: Corn, plums, peaches.

I wonder why more people don't make their own baby food. I have enough in our freezer for the month with only about an hour's worth of work!

I made almost all of my kids' food too. Green beans are easy. My kids both loved sweet potatoes.

I agree! Making baby food is a great way to save money and give them fresh food, and it's not that hard. I don't talk about it much because I get a little infomercial-y.

I think teething makes them feel crummy and sad in general. Charlie has had a runny nose for so much of his life that it's a really tough call as to what is causing it. But I frequently blame teething.

It will pass though, the cold or whatever it is, and the teeth! I'm currently waiting for the bonk your head on E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G phase to pass.

Oooo - will you send some of that homemade baby food up here? It sounds downright tasty! I admit; I was a Gerber-baby mother...*sigh*... and I used to sneak little spoonfuls of the desserts for myself. Still the idea of making my own baby food always appealed to me; they just grew too fast before I could get off my lazy ass to make it.

My son never crawled. He rolled. He went from rolling to standing. Then standing to falling over, straight as a board. It wasn't until my daughter came along a year later and I watched HER grow, that I realized how backwards his development was! By that time son's developmental delays had already been diagnosed. The worst part of his falling over like a stiff board, was that often he'd hit his head on something, on the way down.

Sometimes I think that as teeth erupt tiny infections get started through the gums. I'm not so sure about teething and no fever related to it. Something must be going on that is fairly universal because all mothers pretty much report the same symptoms. I totally get why babies cry during teething - it's their first time subjected to constant pain in the mouth! I'd cry and whine too...oh right. I do after I get teeth filled!

He'll be gumming everything now. Fingers taste the best and they crunch with a satisfying sound! I found that putting a facecloth under COLD water for a bit, then pressing down on the sore area helped baby handle the pain for a bit.

Some of the commercial baby food is just gross. Homemade is so much tastier, cheaper and so easy. Wow girl, I don't know how you do it all!

Liam's teething has been going on for oh, 6 months now and we still don't have any visible teeth. The two top and bottom are right there lurking causing days of torture. I swear he is going to be five years old and we'll still be waiting on teeth!!

I can't believe he's mobile now!

And good for you on making your own baby food. I would have no patience for it.

I should just buy stock in Gerber right now. :)
