Under the Wire

It's still Sunday in Chicago, so I'm good for Day 4 of NaBloPoMo90210 ... whatever. Rock on.

This weekend has been fairly uneventful, and I'm thankful for that. The Targo and I are pretty much non-stop from next weekend on. We have a lot of travel, a lot of baby classes, and a lot of holidays (like most of you ... um.) during the next few months. A weekend of chilling out is just what this (all-but-dissertation) Dr. ordered.

We just got back from seeing American Gangster. I thought it was pretty amazing. Denzel Washington will always be one of my favorite actors and he looked as pretty as ever. Russell Crowe, on the other hand, was not looking as Gladiator-licious as he once did. Regardless, he was impressive as well. While there were no actual gangsters at the theater we went to, a girl did accidentally spill Icee in my hair. It was a freak accident that requires too much explanation and possibly finger puppets. But it was still gross. And I think it was blue.

In baby news, I've hit my 29th week. Goodness. Seven months and growing strong. I've gained a total of 17 pounds (six in the past four weeks!) and feel like I'm going to break every chair I sit on and not quite make it into every doorway. And also, here's what Baby Center says about this week:

Some old friends — heartburn and constipation — may take center stage now. The pregnancy hormone progesterone relaxes smooth muscle tissue throughout your body, including your gastrointestinal tract. This relaxation, coupled with the crowding in your abdomen, slows digestion, which in turn can cause ... heartburn ...

The heartburn. My Gah, people. It kills me. Before this past month, I could count on one hand the number of times I've had heartburn. Wow, does it suck.

Another Lazy Saturday

I love Saturdays! Today started out with brunch with a grad school friend at a cute restaurant - I had coconut French toast. And now, I'm snuggling on the papasan with Magic, watching the first season of The Ghost Whisperer. I always feel the need to apologize for liking this show, but I won't. I just like it. I know plenty of people who watch absolute garbage! (Hmm, I guess that's a roundabout apology. Heh.) I mostly feel bad about my GW like-affair because The Targo hates it more than should be legal. This is the same man who surfs the Internet for funny video clips to show me, and most of them are so not funny. So, like, whatever: To each his/her own.

Tonight I'm flying solo as The Targo will be at a bar watching college football. We went to the same bar a couple weeks ago for a game and it was beyond smoky. And also, this drunk man, who was at least 6'2", kept tipping over on me. Even after I moved. I had a lousy time. So, I think might wander to Blockbuster and grab the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I know most of you said it was bad, but it can't be worse than The Ghost Whisperer, right?

We Interrupt This Crazy Cat Lady Blog...

...To Bring You a Slightly Political Message.

Because The Targo and I are squarer than Mr. Peabody and Sherman,

We spent our Saturday night - a Saturday night in the summer, no less - watching a documentary. But, it's a movie we've been trying to rent for months!

If you were an idiot like myself, who signed up for credit cards in college, and then made too many midnight trips to Taco Bell, rent Maxed Out. It was incredible. Like any 0f the political documentaries, I suggest you view it with a critical eye. But, if you have any interest in the national debt, the wealth gap, or old people who get swindled out of their life savings, it's worth an hour and a half of your time.

The opening scene shows a real estate investor in Las Vegas. She discusses the "creative financing" behind the building of new luxury homes. The caption afterward says that the techniques she's discussing were the same ones employed by Enron.

The hook is a good one and I guarantee the movie will spark discussion, regardless of your socio-political point of view. Just a warning: I cried. But then again, I'm a sap.
