Ask Me About Weaning...

Um, yeah... So, um. Hmm. Yeah. It didn't go well. In fact, it hasn't gone at all. Nathan refused to drink hardly anything for two days, became HORRENDOUSLY constipated, and then I gave in. Yes, I did. (Don't judge.)

The goal is to re-evaluate the situation and probably wean him at 13 months. I'm getting him to drink a little bit of milk per day and he's discovered the joy of pear juice! I'm sure a huge part of the problem is me and how much I love our time. It's just going to take a little while longer.

I'm breastfeeding a toddler. I'm mostly okay with it - until people look at me funny or make snarky comments. Ultimately, it's my family and our decision. I've got to remember that.

Isn't he only like a year old? Maybe a little older? That's not a toddler hon, he's still a baby. No one would possibly judge you for breastfeeding him still. I think you should worry less about that and just enjoy that "our" time as long as it lasts, because once it's gone, trust me. You'll miss it.

He IS still a baby! You have nothing to worry about! And you didn't "give in", you gave him what he needed! Go with your instinct on this and don't let anyone tell you what you should be doing. Unless you're still nursing him when he's eight years old like that chick in England. And even then, well, who am I to judge?

Most people don't judge until they get to two (or look like they are two). Just take it one day at a time and decide when you both are truly ready! If he is using a cup some of the time - you are ahead of many people!

He hasn't taken a bottle in about a month, but he'll only drink juice or yogurt juice out of his sippy cup. I have been spiking his milk lately with the yogurt juice. He thinks that's okay-ish. Thank you for the support, though. I've been fielding the "when are you going to stop doing *that*?!?" questions since he was six months old. So, I'm a touch defensive. *hugs*

Oh gracious girl, the people who are giving you the "still doing that?" stuff are obviously of the single generation that believed that bottle feeding was the "civilized" thing to do.

The fact is this: throughout history, and still through out most of the world, that child would be breastfed until he was AT LEAST two. I breastfed the mackerdoodle before bed and first thing in the morning until she was 13 months old. I only weaned her then because we were wondering if we should go back on the Clomid cocktail.

I would suggest maybe giving him the cup with pumped breast milk in it, if you can do that. I've known that to work as a transition for several of my friends, and only begin weaning once he's comfortable with multiple things from a cup. Just a thought.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. Enjoy the fact that you can still breastfeed him. Honestly, I would still be breastfeeding Liam had it not been for the sleeping issue. If he slept better at night I wouldn't have even probably thought of weaning him at 12 months. I actually feel guilty for not toughing it out. But at the time he was only sleeping for about an hour at a time and I physically couldn't do it anymore. You are a great mom and this only proves it!

When you are both ready, it will happen. Don't stress yourself. I got all stressed that Z wasn't holding his own bottle as soon as some other kids his age, but hey, he has more teeth. It all evens out. :)

Awww...hugs. I don't plan to rush weaning. Nursing is such a short time compared to the rest of our LOs lives. Enjoy it while it lasts. And yeah - people have their opinions. I have an uncle who says "Opinions are like a**holes - everyone's got one." So true.

I'm sure we'll stop nursing our LOs sometime before they go off to college...lol!
